OSP and ODOT Preliminary Statistics - Super Bowl Weekend 2008

Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers reported a decrease in the number of intoxicated driver (DUII) arrests for Super Bowl weekend 2008. Preliminary information also indicates five people were killed in four separate fatal crashes during the weekend, an increase from the two deaths reported during last year's Super Bowl weekend but fewer than the six deaths two years ago.
 
Preliminary statistics from this weekend reflects OSP troopers arrested 23 DUII drivers, thirteen of which happened Sunday after 12 noon. Last year OSP troopers recorded 42 DUII arrests over the Super Bowl weekend, of which fourteen happened after 12 noon.
 
ODOT's Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) confirmed that information there are 5 known fatalities that occurred in four separate fatal crashes during the weekend. The following is a brief review of the four known fatal crashes during the weekend:
  • On Saturday afternoon, February 2nd, OSP investigated a two-vehicle fatal crash on Highway 237 in the La Grande area that resulted in the death of one person. Icy roadway conditions were noted as a possible contributing factor.
  • On Saturday night, February 2nd, OSP investigated a two-vehicle fatal crash on Highway 101 near Hebo that resulted in the death of one person. Speed and icy roadway conditions were noted as possible contributing factors.
  • On Sunday, February 3rd, Linn County Sheriff's Office investigated a fatal crash on Gap Road at Ranch Road that reportedly resulted in one fatality. Details related to this crash should be referred to the investigating agency.
  • On Sunday night, February 3rd, OSP investigated a two-vehicle fatal crash on Highway 6 near Banks that resulted in the death of two people, including the pregnant driver. Icy roadway conditions are noted as a possible contributing factor.
