An Enterprise-area man died Friday morning after losing control of his van on Highway 204 about eight miles east of Weston. The man's van collided with an unoccupied vehicle off the highway and rolled onto its top. Two passengers received minor injuries.
According to Oregon State Police (OSP) Sergeant Robert Cannon, on February 6, 2009 at approximately 8:05 a.m. a 2005 Mercury van driven by EDWIN RONNE SANDS, age 80, from Enterprise, was westbound on Highway 204 near milepost 8 when it lost control. The van drove off the right shoulder and collided with an unoccupied vehicle that had previously slid off the roadway. Both vehicles flipped onto their tops and came to rest off the highway.
SANDS was pronounced deceased at the scene. Safety restraint use is pending confirmation by investigators.
Two female passengers received minor injuries and were transported by Medic 400 ambulance out of Athena to St. Mary's Hospital in Walla Walla, Washington. They are identified as KATHLEEN R. KIM, age 70, and KRISTIN K. KLINE, age 13, both from Enterprise.
Spots of ice were present on the highway but it is not confirmed if this was a contributing factor.
OSP troopers from the Pendleton Area Command office are continuing the investigation. Umatilla County Eastern Rural Fire Department and ODOT assisted at the scene.
