Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers are continuing the investigation into a Sunday night two-vehicle fatal traffic crash on Highway 26 just west of the intersection with SE 362nd Avenue in Sandy. The victim's name, JEFFREY WAYNE WOOD, age 23, from Estacada, is being released following confirmation of next of kin notification.
On February 6, 2011 at approximately 9:53 p.m. a commercial truck pulling a box trailer loaded with US mail driven by RICK D. BELL, age 54, from Oregon City, was stopped in the right hand eastbound lane of Highway 26 for a red stop signal at the SE 362nd Avenue intersection. According to a witness, a 2005 Honda Accord operated by WOOD was being driven erratically eastbound approaching the intersection when it failed to stop and crashed into the back of the trailer at approximately 50 mph.
At the time of impact the commercial truck and trailer were starting to pull forward. After impact the truck stopped on the east side of the intersection. BELL was not injured. He was driving for Nielsen Trucking out of Beaverton.
WOOD, who was driving with a suspended license, was pronounced deceased at the scene.
OSP troopers from the Portland and Government Camp offices are continuing the investigation. Neither alcohol nor any other impairment has been confirmed as contributing factors.
OSP was assisted at the scene by Sandy Police Department, Sandy Fire Department, ODOT and the Clackamas County Medical Examiner's Office.
