Lieutenant Gregg Hastings
Public Information Officer
Office: (503) 731-3020 ext. 247

A Swiss Home-area man died Friday morning when his vehicle left Highway 126W about ten miles east of Florence and struck several trees. Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers report the victim left work following his shift as a security employee at Three Rivers Casino and was en route home when he may have fallen asleep at the time of the crash.
According to Sergeant Ron Martin, on February 8, 2008 at approximately 5:00 a.m. a 2003 Suzuki Aerio driven by BOBBY RAY BENDER, age 27, from Swiss Home, was eastbound on Highway 126W near milepost 10. As the vehicle approached a right curve, it drove straight off the highway and traveled about 200 feet parallel to road before crashing into several trees.
BENDER was pronounced deceased at the scene. He was using safety restraints and the vehicle's airbags deployed.
OSP troopers from the Florence and Springfield offices responded to investigate. Fatigue is a possible contributing factor.
ODOT, Siuslaw Fire Department, and Mapleton Fire Department assisted at the scene. The highway was not blocked.
