Fatal Traffic Crash - Highway 22E / Santiam Pass

One person was killed and five others injured Saturday afternoon in a two vehicle collision in the Santiam Pass area on Highway 22E in Linn County.
On February 14, 2009 at approximately 12:30 p.m. a Dodge Dakota pickup driven by LEO GILLERAN, age 66, from Mt. Vernon, was westbound on Highway 22E near milepost 78 when it lost control on the ice/snow covered roadway. The pickup crossed broadside into the eastbound lane where it was struck in the passenger side by a Chevrolet Suburban with four occupants.
The pickup's passenger, SANDRA GILLERAN, age 61, was pronounced deceased at the scene. She was using safety restraints and the pickup's airbags deployed.
LEO GILLERAN was seriously injured and transported by air ambulance to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend. He was using safety restraints.
The Suburban's four occupants received minor injuries and were transported by ambulance to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend. The driver is identified as BRETT ADAMS, age 49, from Dallas, Oregon. Passengers are identified as KAREN ADAMS, age 50; SAMUEL ADAMS, age 17; and, AUSTIN BOATMAN, age 16. All were using safety restraints.
Oregon State Police troopers from the Salem Area Command office, with the assistance of Bend area troopers, are continuing the investigation. Black Butte Fire Department, US Forest Service law enforcement, and ODOT assisted at the scene.
Eastbound lanes were closed until about 5:00 p.m.
