Two suspects are in custody on murder-related charges following the investigation into the 1992 disappearance of a 36-year old Mitchell, Oregon man. Both men were arrested, one near Las Vegas, Nevada and the other in Roseburg, Oregon, for Aggravated Murder and Murder after they were indicted earlier this month by a Grant County grand jury.
Grant County District Attorney Ryan Joslin announced Wednesday, February 22, 2012, the arrests of THOMAS ALLEN COLBERT, age 51, from Las Vegas, Nevada, and GEORGE SHADRICK BOGAN, age 46, from Roseburg, Oregon. Oregon State Police (OSP) Criminal Investigations Division detectives spent nearly two years working closely with the Grant County District Attorney’s Office before a grand jury indicted the suspects February 7, 2012.
Two OSP Criminal Investigations Division detectives traveled to Las Vegas and worked closely with Las Vegas Metro Police Department (LVMPD). On February 17, 2012 at approximately 9:15 a.m., COLBERT was arrested without incident at his Indian Springs, Nevada residence by detectives from the Criminal Apprehension Team/Fugitive force and LVMPD Resident Officers assigned to Indian Springs. COLBERT was transported to the Clark County, Nevada Detention Center and is awaiting extradition to Oregon.
On February 21, 2012 at approximately 4:30 p.m., OSP detectives from the Bend and Roseburg offices arrested BOGAN without incident during a traffic stop near his residence. Troopers transported BOGAN to the Douglas County Jail where he was lodged pending transfer to Grant County.
The victim, DANNY KAYE SWEET, age 36, disappeared in October 1992 from the Mitchell, Oregon area where he was staying with friends. SWEET was reported missing by friends in early 1993 to the Crook County Sheriff’s Office, initiating a missing person investigation.
On January 21, 1996, two teenagers looking for horns on a remote area of range land near Mt. Vernon in Grant County discovered the near fully intact skeletal remains of a clothed unidentified person. Dental records confirmed the remains were DANNY KAYE SWEET. The Oregon State Medical Examiner’s Office determined the manner of death was homicide.
The Grant County Sheriff’s Office activated the Major Crime Team to start an investigation. Since the beginning, this extensive investigation has involved personnel and resources from the Grant County Sheriff’s Office, Crook County Sheriff’s Office, Oregon Department of Justice, OSP Criminal Investigations Division, OSP Forensic Services Division and an OSP crime analyst. The investigation led to locations in Oregon, Idaho and Nevada.
The ongoing investigation alleges COLBERT and SWEET were known drug associates and, shortly before his disappearance, SWEET accumulated drug-related debts to then-Prineville resident BOGAN. The deceased remains of SWEET were found on a BLM section of land surrounded by private ranch land owned at the time by COLBERT’s relatives.
A copy of the grand jury indictments, LVMPD news release, and photographs of each defendant and the victim (pdf only) are provided in links with this release.
