Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers, with the assistance of McMinnville Police Department and Newberg-Dundee Police Department, are continuing the investigation into Saturday afternoon's single vehicle fatal traffic crash on Highway 18 underneath of the Highway 99W overpass. The crash involved a vehicle attempting to elude two Yamhill County deputies following a reported suicidal person in the Sheridan area.
Update information indicates on February 26, 2011 at approximately 2:23 p.m. a report of a suicidal person in the Sheridan area was received by Yamhill County Sheriff's Office. At 2:32 p.m. a deputy spotted the person driving a 1989 Volvo station wagon eastbound on Highway 18 and attempted to stop the vehicle. The male driver failed to yield and the deputy notified Yamhill County dispatch that the vehicle was attempting to elude.
At 2:38 p.m. the vehicle drove off the roadway and collided head-on with the Highway 99W overpass supports. The driver, WILLIAM SCOTT BILBIE, age 50, from Sheridan, was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The Yamhill County Sheriffs Office requested OSP lead the investigation with the assistance of the previously mentioned agencies. ODOT assisted with traffic control while the highway was closed about five hours.
