A successful interagency patrol enforcement operation held earlier this week over a two day period in eastern Oregon concluded with multiple criminal arrests, the seizure of over a pound of marijuana, and numerous traffic citations and warnings.
On March 1st and 2nd, troopers from Ontario, Lakeview, Burns and La Grande, along with a Harney County Sheriff's Office sergeant, focused 20 hours of traffic enforcement and criminal apprehension efforts on Highway 95, Highway 20 and Interstate 84. Drug detection canines from OSP and Harney County assisted officers. Seventy-eight (78) vehicles were stopped for numerous hazardous and non-hazardous traffic violations resulting in:
  • 18 traffic citations and 91 warnings issued
  • 4 citations for Possession of less than an Ounce of Marijuana
  • 7 felony drug related arrests
  • 2 arrest warrants served
Three related incidents of note:
  • On March 1, 2011 an OSP sergeant stopped a vehicle on Highway 95 near milepost 45 for traveling 79 mph in a 55 mph speed zone. Subsequent investigation during the traffic stop with the help of an OSP drug detection canine led to the discovery of a small amount of methamphetamine and marijuana. The driver and passenger were both cited and released on drug and traffic related charges.
  • On March 1, 2011 an OSP trooper and sergeant stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation on Highway 95 near milepost 39. Subsequent investigation during the traffic stop led to the discovery of one pound of marijuana concealed in the vehicle. EMILY MOORE, age 25, from Idaho Falls, Idaho was cited and released to appear in circuit court for Unlawful Possession, Delivery and Manufacture of a Controlled Substance - Marijuana.
  • On March 2, 2011 an OSP sergeant attempted to stop a vehicle for a speed violation on Interstate 84 near milepost 362. The vehicle failed to yield and attempted to elude at speeds reaching 80 mph. Troopers deployed spike strips near milepost 371, deflating both front tires and leading to the driver going off the freeway and into a fence. Troopers arrested JOE PIERCE, age 51, from Alturas, California and lodged him in the Malheur County Jail for Felony Attempt to Elude, Unlawful Possession/Distribution/Manufacture of Marijuana, Reckless Driving, Criminal Mischief in the Second Degree, and two game offenses. He was in possession of approximately 1/4 pound of marijuana. (Photograph link provided showing vehicle following this incident)
