Following the determination that the discovery of an undentified deceased male near the Interstate 5 northbound on ramp from Mission Street in Salem is on state property, Oregon State Police (OSP) detectives are taking the lead in the criminal investigaton.  Salem police initially responded and were investigating the incident before it was transferred to OSP detectives.

According to previous Salem police news releases, on March 4, 2008 at about 2:20 a.m. the Salem Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a brush fire near the northbound on ramp from Mission Street onto Interstate 5.  When they arrived they found the unidentified 50 - 60 year old victim was already deceased and burning the fire.

An autopsy done by the State Medical Examiner's Office was inconclusive and failed to positively identify a manner of death.

Oregon State Police detectives, working in cooperation with the Marion County District Attorney's Office and Salem Police Department, are continuing the investigation to positively identify the victim and determine manner and cause of death.

At this time all further questions are being referred to Marion County Deputy District Attorney Doug Hansen at pager (503) 370-1729.
