A truck driver was cited by Oregon State Police (OSP) following an investigation into Tuesday morning's injury traffic crash on Highway 47 about three miles south of Gaston involving a Gaston School District school bus and an empty flatbed trailer pulled by a large truck. The bus driver and nine students transported to a Hillsboro-area hospital were reportedly treated and released for minor injuries.
According to OSP Trooper Dan Davis, on March 8, 2011 at approximately 7:35 a.m. a Gaston School District school bus with K - 12 aged students operated by SHARON BREGANTE-CANDAU, age 43, from Gaston, was stopped southbound on Highway 47 near milepost 30 with warning lights activated to load students. As a northbound 1997 Kenworth truck pulling two empty trailers driven by GEORGE W. CLARNO JR, age 57, from McMinnville, traveled through a curve CLARNO saw the stopped school bus and braked to stop. The rear trailer slid around partially into a ditch before coming back onto the highway where it collided with the front of the bus.
BREGANTE-CANDAU, two high school age students and 7 elementary age students were transported to Tuality Community Hospital in Hillsboro. Two of the students were taken in a private vehicle. BREGANTE-CANDAU and seven students were transported by ambulance.
CLARNO was not injured. Davis cited CLARNO for Careless Driving.
Both drivers were using safety restraints.
The student's names and ages are not available for this release.
OSP troopers from the McMinnville Area Command office conducted the investigation.
Yamhill County Sheriff's Office, McMinnville Police Department, Gaston Rural Fire District, Yamhill Fire Protection District, ODOT Motor Carrier section, and ODOT highway maintenance personnel assisted at the scene. ODOT had a detour in place during the over 5 hour highway closure.
