A north Portland-area woman was arrested early Monday morning after attempting to elude Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers for twenty miles on Interstate 5 south of Eugene. The incident ended when Cottage Grove police deployed spike strips, flattening two tires as the vehicle neared their city. After she was arrested, officers discovered the woman's two children in the car's back seat and they were later released to Department of Human Services.

On March 12, 2012 at approximately 2:22 a.m. an off-duty OSP trooper called OSP Northern Command Center dispatch of a possible DUII driver traveling 80 mph southbound on Interstate 5 near milepost 228.

At 2:50 a.m., an OSP trooper saw the 1998 Mercury Sable four-door at milepost 196 in the Eugene area and attempted to stop it. The car's driver failed to respond to the trooper's emergency lights for several miles while continuing southbound at approximately 60 mph in light traffic. Near milepost 186, the vehicle sped up to over 100 mph.

At approximately 3:01 a.m. Cottage Grove police deployed spike strips near milepost 175. The eluding vehicle drove over the spike strips deflating two front tires. The left front tire shredded as it continued south at slow speeds until stopping about a minute later. The driver was initially non-compliant with police orders to exit the car but after a couple minutes she did get out and was taken into custody without further incident.

The trooper and officers then checked the car and found the driver's 4-year old son and 9-year old daughter seated in the back seat. Both were using safety restraints and were OK.

The driver was identified as MARIA ELENA ANDRES, age 30, from north Portland. She was lodged in the Lane County Jail on the following charges:
  • Felony Attempt to Elude in a Vehicle
  • DUII --- Drugs
  • Reckless Driving
  • Recklessly Endangering Another Person (2 counts)

Both children were turned over to Department of Human Services.

OSP was also assisted during the incident by Springfield and Eugene police. One lane was closed during the arrest and scene investigation.
