Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers are continuing the investigation into Thursday afternoon's pedestrian-involved fatal traffic crash on the Highway 34 bypass just inside Linn County near the Willamette River. The victim's name and residence information is released in this update following completion of immediate next of kin notification.
On March 17, 2011 at approximately 4:25 p.m. a HUT airport transportation shuttle bus driven by MICHAEL A. STILLMAN, age 54, from Albany, with several passengers on board was westbound on the Highway 34 bypass in the Corvallis area. According to witnesses, the male pedestrian was standing near the westbound lane and as the shuttle bus approached his location he ran in front of the bus and was struck.
DAVID JOEL MONTGOMERY, age 40, from Philomath, was transported by ambulance to Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center in Corvallis where he was pronounced deceased after arrival.
No one was injured on the shuttle bus. No citations were issued and there appears to be no fault by the shuttle bus driver.
OSP troopers from the Albany Area Command office were assisted at the scene by members of the interagency Linn County Accident Investigation Team comprised of officers from OSP, Albany Police Department, Lebanon Police Department, and Linn County Sheriff's Office. Corvallis police, OSP Fish & Wildlife Division troopers and ODOT also assisted at the scene.
All lanes were closed about 30 minutes and then with the help of ODOT traffic was flagged through in both directions. All lanes were opened shortly before 7:00 p.m.
