OSP Coos Bay Area Command Office Receives "DUII Agency of the Year for Oregon State Police"
Lieutenant Steve Smartt
Oregon State Police - Coos Bay
Office: (541) 888-2677 ext. 224

At the 2008 Annual DUII Multi-Disciplinary Impaired Driving Training Conference held March 14th and 15th in Bend, the Oregon DUII Multi-Disciplinary Training Task Force presented their annual awards of excellence to various organizations, groups, and individuals who made a significant contribution to deterring impaired driving in Oregon during 2007.
A municipal, county and state police agency were selected from nominations for police agencies that have shown notable improvements in impaired driving enforcement taking a proactive, leadership role in their communities. The Oregon State Police Office or Worksite selected must have also provided a willingness to aggressively train and encourage their officers to enforce DUII and drug-impaired driving laws and taken a proactive approach to deter DUII.
During this year's conference, the Oregon State Police (OSP) Coos Bay Area Command office was selected to receive the "DUII Agency of the Year Award for the Oregon State Police".
"The five troopers who work out of this office arrested 210 DUII drivers, including 50 during daytime hours, and helped the office be near or at the top for DUII holiday arrests statewide," said Lieutenant Steve Smartt, Area Commander for the Oregon State Police. "Two of the troopers who work nights are also DREs (Drug Recognition Evaluators) and they also conducted 66 evaluations on suspected-drug impaired drivers."
Senior Trooper Freddie Dunlap, who is assigned at the OSP Coos Bay Area Command office, received an individual award as the Oregon State Police DRE Enforcement Officer of the Year. Additional information regarding that award is the subject of a separate news release.

Last year, the OSP Newport Area Command office received this award. In 2005, the award went to the OSP Salem Area Command office.
