Sergeant Scott Punch
Oregon State Police - Gold Beach
Office: (541) 247-6641 ext. 222

A two-vehicle collision Wednesday evening on Highway 101 at Cape Sebastian claimed the life of a Brookings-area man.
On March 26, 2008 at approximately 8:35 p.m., a 1996 BMW sedan driven by LESLIE P. SALGADO, age 58, from  Brookings, was southbound on Highway 101 near milepost 334 when it lost control due to ice on the roadway.  The BMW slid sideways into the northbound lane where it was struck by a northbound 1998 Dodge Durango utility vehicle operated by MELISA VAUGHT, age 25, from Cave Junction.  Also riding in the vehicle was her son, Gage Vaught, age 7, who was seated in the rear passenger area in a booster seat.
Neither Melisa Vaught nor her son suffered any injuries.  Both were using safety restraints.
SALGADO died at the scene.  He was using safety restraints.
Preliminary investigation indicates that excessive speed for conditions was a factor in the collision.
Oregon State Police troopers from the Gold Beach office are investigating the collision.
Assistance at the scene provided by Curry County Sheriffs Office, Gold Beach Fire Department, and Cal-Or Ambulance/Life Flight.
