Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers are continuing the investigation into Saturday afternoon's fatal motorcycle crash on Highway 30 north of Deer Island that resulted in the death of a 29-year old St. Helens man who had purchased the motorcycle earlier in the week.
According to OSP Recruit Trooper Kim Waddell, on March 27, 2010 at approximately 1:49 p.m., JOHN ANTHONY RETHATI, age 29, from St. Helens, was operating his newly purchased Harley Davidson motorcycle while following his father westbound on Highway 30 near milepost 37. RETHATI was negotiating a left curve when, according to witnesses, he appeared to lose control and struck the guardrail on the westbound shoulder. He was ejected over the guardrail and came to rest on the ground. His motorcycle continued traveling across the highway until it came to a stop on the eastbound shoulder.
RETHATI was wearing a protective helmet. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.
OSP troopers from the St. Helens work site are continuing the investigation with the assistance of an OSP collision reconstructionist.
Rainier Fire Department, Columbia County Sheriff's Office, Columbia City Police Department, and ODOT assisted at the scene. The westbound lane was closed 3 hours during the investigation.
