An Eagle Point man is dead and another is in custody following a shooting incident at their residence. The incident occurred early Wednesday afternoon and was initially reported as a possible suicide. Further investigation led to the arrest of the victim's roommate who was subsequently lodged at the Jackson County Jail.

On March 28, 2012, at approximately 12:40 p.m., officers from the Eagle Point Police Department responded to a reported suicide at the address of 128 N. Buchanan in Eagle Point. Upon their arrival, the officers found a 24 year old male subject, later identified as JOSEPH FAAETEETE, age 24, from Eagle Point, deceased in the garage from an apparent gun shot wound. Based on conflicting statements officers received from witnesses on scene, a decision was made to activate the Major Assault and Death Investigation Unit (MADIU).

The Oregon State Police assumed the lead in the investigation and were assisted by other detectives from the Jackson County Sheriff's Office, Central Point Police Department, Ashland Police Department, Oregon State Police Forensic Services, as well as an Oregon State Police Detective assigned to the Medford Area Drug and Gang Enforcement Team (MADGE).

Further investigation, including witness statements and evidence collected, led to the arrest of the victim's roommate, DYLAN BRANTING ASHMUN, age 26, also of Eagle Point, after it was discovered that ASHMUN had actually been the one who shot FAAETEETE. A search of the residence resulted in the discovery of multiple firearms, drugs and drug paraphernalia.

An autopsy done March 29 found the cause of death was from a single gunshot wound to the head.

ASHMUN was lodged at the Jackson County Jail on charges of First Degree Manslaughter and being a Felon in Possession of a Firearm. Additional charges are pending. No further information related to the circumstances of the shooting will be released at this time.

Two of three people who left the residence prior to police arrival have been identified and located. A third person identified but not located was contacted by investigators Thursday afternoon.

Anyone with information related to this incident are asked to contact Detective Deanna Harris or Sergeant Jeff Fitzgerald at 541-776-6114. The investigation into this incident is continuing at this time.
