Interagency Traffic Safety Effort in Harney County Nets Several Citations, Warnings, and 3 lbs of Marijuana

A 9-hour interagency traffic safety effort held Wednesday in southeast Oregon led to numerous enforcement contacts and several arrests. The traffic stops also resulted in the seizure of 3 pounds of marijuana, other unlawfully possessed drugs, and other evidence.
 
On March 30, 2011, between 11:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. Oregon State Police (OSP) and Harney County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) targeted enforcement efforts on Highway 20 and Highway 395 in the Burns area. Officers, assisted by two drug detection canines from OSP and HCSO, stopped a total of 65 vehicles for traffic violations and issued 11 citations and 58 warnings. One driver was arrested for DUII, and two others were arrested on drug-related charges.
 
Three traffic stops of note during the enforcement effort:
  • A HCSO sergeant attempted to stop a suspected DUII driver in the Burns city limits. The driver attempted to elude for several blocks before abandoning his vehicle and fleeing on foot. The driver was found hiding under a tree and arrested without further incident. JAMES WHITE, age 40, from Burns, was arrested for Felony Attempt to Elude in a Vehicle, Misdemeanor Attempt to Elude on Foot, DUII, Reckless Driving, and Violation of a Release Agreement.
  • A HCSO sergeant stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation on Highway 20 near milepost 105 that subsequently led to the discovery of approximately 3 pounds of marijuana in a pillow. JEREMIAH D. JOHNSON, age 33, from Murphy, Oregon was arrested for Unlawful Possession, Delivery and Manufacture of a Controlled Substance - Marijuana.
  • An OSP sergeant and trooper stopped a vehicle on Highway 20 near milepost 112 for a traffic violation. A subsequent investigation led to the discovery of marijuana, prescription medications including morphine and hydrocodone, and other evidence. An adult male was arrested for several charges including Unlawful Possession and Delivery of a Controlled Substance - Marijuana, Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance - Morphine, Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance - Hydrocodone, and Tampering with Evidence. His name is withheld at this time pending an ongoing investigation.
