Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers are continuing the investigation into a Saturday afternoon alcohol-involved single vehicle fatal traffic crash on Highway 95 about twelve miles north of Jordan Valley. The crash resulted in the death of a 9-year old boy and injuries to five others, including four of his family members.
According to OSP Lieutenant Richard Pileggi, on April 3, 2010 at approximately 5:30 p.m. a 2007 Nissan Frontier four-door pickup driven by RIGOBERTO MARTINEZ-PEREZ, age 33, from Nampa, Idaho was northbound on Highway 95 near milepost 12 at a high rate of speed when it traveled off the right shoulder. The driver overcorrected, rolled several times off the opposite left shoulder and down a 40-foot embankment before coming to rest on its wheels at the bottom of a ravine.
The pickup was occupied by six people, five of which are identified and the sixth that is in critical condition has not.
RIGOBERTO MARTINEZ-PEREZ was reportedly transported to West Valley Hospital in Caldwell, Idaho with non-life threatening injuries. Subsequent to the ongoing investigation, he was cited at the hospital by OSP for DUII. Additional charges are pending through consultation with the Malheur County District Attorney's Office.
His son, GERADO MARTINEZ, age 9, was seated in the right rear position and reportedly was pronounced deceased after arrival at St. Alphonsus Medical Center in Boise, Idaho.
The other four occupants were transported to St. Alphonsus Medical Center for treatment. They are identified as:
  • Right front passenger/wife, ANA MARIA MARTINEZ, age 33, with non-life threatening injuries.
  • Middle left rear seat passenger, JULIO AQUINO, age 5, with non-life threatening injuries.
  • Middle right rear seat passenger/daughter, JULITCA MARTINEZ, age 5, with non-life threatening injuries.
  • Left rear seat adult female passenger is not positively identified and received critical injuries.
OSP troopers from the Ontario Area Command office are continuing the investigation. Safety restrains use by all occupants is pending investigative confirmation.
ODOT, Jordan Valley Ambulance, and Malheur County Sheriff's Office assisted at the scene. Air ambulance service was provided from the scene to transport some of the injured occupants.
The highway was intermittently closed over a five hour period during the scene response and investigation.
