A Eugene-area woman died Saturday afternoon when she lost control of her motorcycle and crashed into a guardrail while attempting to turn off a county road onto Highway 38 east of Wells Creek in Douglas County.
According to Oregon State Police (OSP) Senior Trooper Fred Dunlap, on April 4, 2009 at approximately 5:26 p.m., a 2009 BMW 650 motorcycle operated by DIANE ELLEN DETUERK, age 57, from Eugene, was southbound on Weatherly Creek Road attempting to turn left onto Highway 38. DETUERK lost control of her motorcycle and impacted a highway guardrail. Resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful and she was pronounced deceased at the scene.
DETUERK was wearing a protective helmet and riding equipment. A riding partner was traveling a short distance ahead of her and not involved in the collision.
OSP troopers from the Coos Bay Area Command office are continuing the investigation.
Douglas County Sheriff's Office, Coos County Medical Examiner's Office, Scottsburg Fire Department, Lower Umpqua Hospital Ambulance, and ODOT assisted at the scene with the investigation.
Traffic on Highway 38 was closed about 90 minutes.
