Fatal Traffic Crash - Highway 101 north of Florence

A Florence-area woman died Saturday afternoon when the motorcycle she was operating crossed the centerline on Highway 101 about four miles north of Florence and collided head-on with a car.
According to Oregon State Police (OSP) Sergeant Mike Brewster, on April 12, 2008 at approximately 12:50 p.m. a 2007 Baron 150cc motorcycle operated by VALERIE LEE HOOD, age 64, from Florence, was northbound on Highway 101 near milepost 183 being followed by her husband who was operating another motorcycle. As HOOD was negotiating a right curve, she crossed the centerline and crashed head-on with a southbound 2003 Buick driven by CAROLYN RAMUS, age 64, from Salem.
HOOD was ejected from her motorcycle and pronounced deceased at the scene. She was wearing a protective helmet. Her husband witnessed the crash and was not injured.
CAROLYN RAMUS was transported by ambulance to Peace Harbor Medical Center in Florence with minor injuries. Her husband, CARL RAMUS, age 67, was a passenger and was not injured.
OSP troopers from the Florence work site are completing the investigation. No citations will be issued.
Lane County Sheriff's Office, Lane Rural Fire Department, Lane County Medical Examiner, and ODOT assisted at the scene. ODOT established a detour around the scene while Highway 101 was closed about two hours.
