Lieutenant Gregg Hastings
Public Information Officer
(503) 731-3020 ext. 247

A 49-year old Milwaukie man died from injuries sustained Tuesday night when he was struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross Highway 224 on foot east of 82nd Drive in the Clackamas area. Oregon State Police (OSP) was notified by the medical examiner that the man died Wednesday night at a Portland-area hospital where he was being treated. The investigation is continuing.
On April 10, 2012 at approximately 10:57 p.m. a 2002 Dodge van driven by ALEJO MENDEZ REYES, age 34, from Fairview, was westbound on Highway 224 about 400 feet east of 82nd Drive when it struck a man trying to cross the highway on foot. The pedestrian, identified as BARRY ALAN WHITCHURCH, age 49, from Milwaukie, was transported by AMR ambulance to Oregon Health & Sciences University where he was treated until he died late Wednesday night.
MENDEZ REYES remained at the scene and fully cooperated with investigating troopers. There is no evidence alcohol was a contributing driving factor but MENDEZ REYES was cited by OSP for Driving While Suspended.
WHITCHURCH was not in a crosswalk and was wearing dark clothing in the darkness.
OSP troopers from the Portland Area Command office are continuing the investigation. Trooper Cameron Bailey is the lead investigator.
OSP was assisted at the scene by Clackamas County Sheriff's Office, Clackamas Fire District #1, and ODOT.
