For only the second time in 16 years, the Oregon DUII Multi-Disciplinary Training Task Force has selected an individual for a special award recognizing their dedication to service and diligence toward the fight against impaired driving. This recipient was one of many honored at the annual award banquet held last weekend at the 2009 Annual DUII Multi-Disciplinary Impaired Driving Training Conference held April 17th and 18th in Portland.
The "2008 Honorary Special Recognition Award" is reserved for a person who helps a sweeping range of disciplines in the fight against impaired driving. The first recipient, Ms. Judy Hayes of the Oregon State Police, inspired the creation of this tribute and success of a program that often goes largely unnoticed by many.
In 2008 the Oregon DUII Multi-Disciplinary Training Task Force saw Ms. Laura Steward emerge, showing the type of service and devotion deserving of this recognition. Steward has been described "as the lifeline of Oregon's Drug Evaluation and Classification Program" and works hard to ensure the success of the program and those who are certified Drug Recognition Experts (DRE).
Steward has worked for the Oregon State Police for nearly ten years and now works in the Patrol Services Division, serving as the DRE State Coordinator's Assistant since November 2004. Working behind the scenes, Steward processes mounds of DRE paperwork including reports, projects, training and certification. The collection and compilation of drug impaired driving data is a resource to the state and national level impaired driving community.
