A Eugene-area man reported missing April 11th was found last weekend deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound near a tree east of Highway 101 in the vicinity where his pickup was found abandoned south of Gold Beach.
MARK J. REES, age 49, from Eugene, was reported missing by his ex-wife April 11, 2010 to Eugene Police Department. His vehicle, a dark blue 1998 Toyota Tacoma extra cab pickup, was spotted three days earlier by a Curry County deputy at a Highway 101 public wayside near milepost 336 in the Pistol River area. People windsurfing in the area told police the pickup had been there for a couple days. Eugene police were contacted and made a welfare check at the registered owner's (REES) address, reporting back that it was secured and no one was around.

The pickup had been tagged as a possible abandoned vehicle on April 10. Two days later it was towed by a local tow company. Another computer check using the pickup's license plate indicated it was associated with the Eugene Police Department's missing person investigation.
Since learning of the connection with the missing person investigation, area checks failed to find REES.
On Saturday, April 17, Eugene police detectives traveled to Curry County and accompanied OSP to where the pickup was found. While checking the area, REES was found deceased in a brushy area behind a large tree approximately 40 yards east of Highway 101. Next of kin were notified.
