16-Year Old Driver Facing Charges Related to Serious Injury Crash - Highway 20 east of Newport

Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers are continuing the investigation into Saturday morning's serious injury two vehicle head-on Highway 20 about two miles east of Newport.
On May 5, 2012 at approximately 8:25 a.m. a blue 1999 Land River sport utility vehicle driven bySAMANTHA FERRIS, age 16, from Newport, was westbound on Highway 20 near milepost 2when, for an unknown reason, it narrowly missed sideswiping a white compact passenger car and then collided head-on with an eastbound silver 2009 Honda Pilot sport utility vehicle with three occupants.
FERRIS was transported to Pacific Communities Hospital in Newport with minor injuries. She was later released following treatment and cited by OSP to appear for DUII, Reckless Driving, and three counts of Assault in the Second Degree.
Two of the Honda's occupants were seriously injured and transported by air ambulance to a trauma center. Both men were taken to Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center in Corvallis. They are identified as driver ROBERT "THERRON" KRAFT, age 46, from Toledo, and right front passenger SHANNON MONROE, age 42, from Toledo. The right rear passenger MICHAEL BARKER, age 29, from Toledo, was taken to Pacific Communities Hospital with non-life threatening injuries and released following treatment.
Three of the four occupants were extricated by fire personnel from Newport Fire & Rescue and Toledo Fire & Rescue.
All occupants were using safety restraints and both vehicles' airbags deployed.
Senior Trooper Bob Shawver is the lead investigator.
OSP was also assisted at the scene by Newport Police Department, Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, and ODOT. The highway was closed about 4 1/2 hours.
