A 40-year old psychiatric patient from the Oregon State Hospital (OSH) was reported to be on unauthorized leave Friday, May 4. According to OSH, the patient, MARTIE K. MITCHELL, is not considered to be a danger to herself or others.
Oregon State Police (OSP) is conducting an investigation to help locate hre and bring her safely back to the hospital. Anyone seeing MITCHELL should call OSP at 800-452-7888.
MITCHELL was admitted to the Oregon State Hospital on June 17, 2010, as a forensic commitment from Klamath County. MITCHELL was deemed Guilty Except for Insanity after she admitted in 2007 to illegally purchasing a firearm with intent to harm a detective who was investigating her for drug use and child abuse. She was sentenced to 20 years for aggravated attempted murder under the jurisdiction of the Psychiatric Security Review Board (PSRB). Patients under the jurisdiction of the PSRB live in a variety of settings, from independent living in the community to the Oregon State Hospital.
MITCHELL is a resident of one of the group homes on the grounds of OSH that are staffed 24-7 and designed for patients who receive treatment but do not need to live within the secure perimeter of the state hospital.
She was last seen in her room at approximately 9:50 p.m. MITCHELL was reported missing approximately 10:30 p.m. when a nurse checked in on her and discovered she wasn't there.
Hospital officials, who reported the escape to state and local law enforcement agencies, described MITCHELL as 5'1", 212 lbs, with red hair and green eyes. When last seen, she was wearing grey sweat pants and a gray t-shirt.
