An autopsy conducted Monday by the Deputy State Medical Examiner for Lane County indicated the cause of death of a 24-year old man found deceased early Saturday morning in a cell of the Cottage Grove Municipal Jail is aspiration pneumonia. OSP Criminal Investigation Division is continuing the investigation, but at this time there is no indication it is the result of a crime.
On May 5, 2012 at approximately 5:00 a.m. Cottage Grove police reported an unattended death after NATHAN SCOTT COOPER, age 24, from Cottage Grove, was found deceased in a cell. At the request of Cottage Grove Police Department, OSP detectives and the medical examiner responded to the scene to investigate.
COOPER was sentenced on a drug-related charge to confinement at the jail on April 26. The next day he was released for medical treatment related to withdrawal symptoms. After he failed to return, he was arrested April 30 and brought back to the jail.
There were no signs of physical injury or foul play. An autopsy was conducted May 7, 2012 by Deputy State Medical Examiner Dr. Dan Davis. Toxicology results are pending.
The lead investigator is OSP Detective Dusty Sprague. No other information for release at this time.
