Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers are continuing the investigation into a two-vehicle head-on crash Friday afternoon that resulted in the death of two people and injury to two others on Highway 20 about twenty miles east of Newport.
According to OSP Senior Trooper Bob Shawver, on May 8, 2009 at approximately 5:20 p.m. a 1986 Cadillac De Ville operated by JACK WHIPPLE, age 86, from Seal Rock, was westbound on Highway 20 near milepost 20 when, according to witnesses, it appeared to begin making a pass of another vehicle. As the Cadillac crossed the centerline it collided head-on with an eastbound 1999 Acura Integra driven by CORY ALLEN LEWIS, age 17, from Lebanon. After impact the Cadillac left the highway and rolled onto its top. The Acura came to rest in the center of Highway 20.
WHIPPLE and passenger CONSTANCE ELSIE ABERCROMBIE, age 76, were pronounced deceased at the scene. They resided together in the Seal Rock area. WHIPPLE was not using safety restraints. ABERCROMBIE was using safety restraints.
LEWIS received minor injuries. Right front passenger SHAWNEEN SANTANA, age 18, from Lebanon, was seriously injured. Both were transported by ambulance to Samaritan Pacific Community Hospital. SANTANA was later transferred to Good Samaritan Hospital in Corvallis where she continues to be treated.
OSP troopers from the Newport Area Command office are continuing the investigation. ODOT, Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, Toledo Fire Department and other local emergency response personnel assisted at the scene.
Highway 20 was closed about 3 hours.
