A handgun stolen in a burglary of a Clackamas-area home nearly 40 years ago was returned Monday to its owner after it was recovered in southern California last month.
On May 10, 2010, WARREN SCHAFER, age 90, came to the Oregon State Police (OSP) Portland Area Command office and reclaimed his stolen .45 Remington automatic handgun taken from his home October 27, 1970. In addition to other personal property taken from his home, a total of eleven firearms were reported stolen to OSP including 8 rifles, two shotguns, and the one handgun. SCHAFER, a retired dentist who was 50 years of age at the time of the burglary, said one of the stolen rifles was recovered about ten years ago in Las Vegas, Nevada.
OSP troopers took the initial report and never did make an arrest in the case.
The Remington handgun was recovered by Los Angeles Police Department gang unit and reported to OSP April 12, 2010. Details related to the recovery are not available at this time.
