Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers are continuing the investigation into a fatal traffic crash on Highway 211 about six miles west of Molalla that resulted in the death of a bicyclist from McMinnville.
On May 19, 2011 at approximately 1:45 p.m. a commercial truck pulling a semi-trailer transporting scrap plastic driven by PAUL W. SHINEN, age 47, from Molalla, was traveling eastbound on Highway 211 near milepost 8 as a bicyclist was traveling westbound on the eastbound shoulder. As the truck and semi-trailer was passing the bicyclist, for an unknown reason the bicyclist fell onto the pavement underneath the passing semi-trailer and was run over by the right rear wheels of the trailer.
The bicycle operator, ORLANDO CLINTON FRENCH III, age 51, from McMinnville, was pronounced deceased at the scene. He was wearing a helmet.
SHINEN immediately stopped and was not injured.
OSP troopers from the Portland Area Command office are continuing the investigation. According to witnesses, there was traffic in the westbound lane limiting the truck driver's ability to move into the westbound lane while passing the bicyclist. Highway 211 was closed at the crash scene for 3 1/2 hours.
OSP was assisted at the scene by Clackamas County Sheriff's Office, Molalla Police and Fire Departments, Clackamas County Medical Examiner, and ODOT.
