At the request of Mt. Angel Police Department, Oregon State Police (OSP) is investigating a single vehicle crash involving a Mt. Angel police officer early Thursday morning near the intersection of Howell Prairie Road NE and Monitor-McKee Road NE northeast of Mt. Angel. The crash as a suspect in a stolen vehicle was attempting to elude their officer, who was later treated and released from a hospital with minor injuries.
Information released this morning by Mt. Angel Police Department indicates on May 20, 2010 at approximately 1:00 a.m. Silverton police responded to a reported auto theft in progress. As police were arriving in the area, officers saw the vehicle leaving but they weren't able to find it.
At about 1:25 a.m. Mt. Angel Officer Jimmy Puente spotted the stolen vehicle approaching the city limits and attempted to stop it. The suspect vehicle accelerated at a high rate of speed as Officer Puente tried to keep it in sight. Approaching the intersection of Howell Prairie Road NE and Monitor-McKee Road NE, Officer Puente was negotiating a curve when the rear of the patrol car slid onto the gravel shoulder. The patrol car rolled numerous times off the roadway and came to rest on its wheels.
Officer Puente was able to climb out of the patrol car and was subsequently transported by Woodburn Ambulance to Oregon Health Sciences University. He was treated and released with minor injuries.
The stolen vehicle was located by other officers a short time later on Highway 99E and Waconda Road where it was involved in a single vehicle crash. The driver fled the scene and has not been found.
OSP troopers from the Salem and Portland offices were involved in the investigation.  Questions should be directed to Mt. Angel Police Department at (503) 845-9294.
