Oregon State Police (OSP) is continuing the investigation into Saturday afternoon's collision involving a sport utility vehicle and a bicyclist along Highway 18 just east of Grand Ronde. A bicyclist struck by the vehicle died Saturday night at a Salem-area hospital.
According to OSP Senior Trooper Bridget Taylor, on May 19, 2012 at approximately 2:25 p.m. bicycle riden by STEVEN Y. DAYLEY, age 65, from Camas, Washington was travelling westbound on the shoulder of Highway 18 near milepost 24. This area at the time had congested vehicle traffic while westbound motor vehicles traveled alongside bicyclists riding in an organized cycling event along the westbound shoulder.
A westbound Chevrolet Avalanche pickup driven by FRED M. MOORE III, age 24, from Battleground, Washington, veered right to avoid traffic ahead and struck the bicycle riden byDAYLEY.
DAYLEY was critically injured and transported by ambulance to Salem Memorial Hospital. He died later during the night at the hospital. DAYLEY, who was part of the cycling public sharing the route with registered bike event participants, was wearing a protective helmet.
MOORE was not injured.
OSP troopers were assisted at the scene by deputies from the Polk and Yamhill County Sheriff's Offices, members of West Valley Fire Department, and ODOT.
