Oregon's newest roadside memorial sign honoring law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty was posted Tuesday along Interstate 5 near Woodburn. The sign placement followed a special ceremony at Woodburn Police Department attended by the officers' family, friends, State legislators, and fellow public safety officers and government officials.
On May 22, 2012, Woodburn Police Chief Scott Russell and Oregon State Police Major Joel Lujan joined State Representative Andy Olson to unveil the sign during a special ceremony at Woodburn police headquarters with approximately 80 people in attendance. The roadside memorial sign is the fourth to be posted along an Oregon highway after the 2011 Oregon Legislature passed House Bill 3039 authorizing placement of the signs.
Tuesday's special ceremony honored two fallen Oregon law enforcement officers, Woodburn Police Captain Tom Tennant and Oregon State Police Senior Trooper William "Bill" Hakim, whose names are now displayed on the sign posted by Oregon Department of Transportation along the northbound lanes of Interstate 5 near milepost 271 just south of the Woodburn interchange.
Captain Tennant and Senior Trooper Hakim died in the line of duty as a result of a bomb explosion at a Woodburn-area bank on December 12, 2008. The following links provide additional background information and a photograph of both officers:

The officers' wives were present along with other family members, friends, city government officials, State Representative Betty Komp, and representatives from Marion County District Attorney's Office, Marion County Sheriff's Office, and other local agencies.
Roadside memorial signs were previously erected along Interstate 5 north of Albany (9/1/11 - Oregon State Police Senior Trooper Maria Mignano and Albany Police Officer Jason Hoerauf); Highway 126 in the Eugene/Springfield area (12/10/11 - Eugene Police Officer Chris Kilcullen); and, 04/27/12 - Oregon State Police Superintendent Holly V. Holcomb, Sergeant Richard Schuening, and Recruit Trooper Dan Nelson.
