Death Investigation - Ocean Shore near Devil's Punch Bowl
Sergeant Bill Vanderberg
Oregon State Police - Newport
Office: (541) 265-5354 ext. 226

Oregon State Police (OSP) and the Lincoln County Medical Examiner are completing the investigation into the death of a Eugene-area man after he was found Saturday morning on the rocks above the surf line at the base of a cliff between the Inn at Otter Crest and Devil's Punch Bowl State Natural Area. Preliminary determination by the medical examiner indicates the man died from drowning.
According to OSP Sergeant Bill Vanderberg, on May 24, 2008 at approximately 9:00 a.m. a report was received of a fully clothed body on the rocks near Devil's Punch Bowl. Preliminary investigation indicates the victim, identified as LOGAN MICHAEL DETHMAN, age 25, from Eugene, arrived Friday evening with the family of a friend and was staying at the Inn at Otter Crest. DETHMAN was last seen by friends leaving the condominium on foot at about 2:30 a.m.
A couple visiting the area reported the sighting of the body. Oregon State Police troopers and Depoe Bay Fire & Rescue personnel responded. Investigators do not think the victim fell from the top of the cliff overlooking the area where it was found, nor is there any indication of foul play or that he took his own life.
At about the same time the incident was reported, an unidentified man reportedly turned in the victim's cell phone, Ipod, and flashlight to the Inn at Otter Crest's front desk. OSP would like that person to contact Sergeant Vanderberg at (541) 265-5354 ext. 226.
