An Oregon State Police (OSP) recruit trooper located a missing 64-year old southeast Portland man Saturday evening after recognizing the man from that day’s television news reports.
On May 23, 2009 at approximately 8:30 p.m. OSP Recruit Trooper Tyler Bechtel was driving on Southeast 82nd Avenue at Southeast Powell Boulevard when he saw JOSEPH MONICAL, age 64, walking in a crosswalk. Bechtel stopped and contacted MONICAL who was reported to be afflicted with memory loss and was wearing moccasin slippers, jeans and a flannel shirt. He told Bechtel he couldn’t find the right bus to get home, spent the night on a Tri-met stop bench, and had not eaten or drank anything since leaving home.
A friend notified Portland police late Friday morning that MONICAL was missing after finding his residence in the 8800 block of Southeast Lafayette Street unsecured with his wallet, credit cards and cell phone left there.
MONICAL was transported to a hospital for a medical evaluation and reunited with family and friends.
