Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers are continuing the investigation into Monday night's fatal pedestrian-involved crash that occurred on Highway 101 north of Garibaldi. The pedestrian died from injuries after being transported to a Portland area hospital.
According to OSP Sergeant Greg Plummer, on May 23, 2011 at approximately 8:55 a.m. a 2006 Kenworth truck pulling a semi-trailer driven by GEARY L. KIRK, age 58, from Garibaldi, was southbound on Highway 101 near milepost 54 when it came upon a pedestrian on the southbound highway shoulder. For an undetermined reason, the male pedestrian moved into the southbound lane in the truck's path. KIRK braked, attempted to avoid the man but was unable to do so and struck him.
The pedestrian identified as CHRISTOPHER PAUL NORBURY, age 53, from Forest Grove, was critically injured and initially transported by Tillamook Ambulance to Tillamook County General Hospital. He was then taken by LifeFlight air ambulance to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center where he died from his injuries prior to midnight.
KIRK was not injured. He was using safety restraints.
OSP troopers from the Tillamook work site are continuing the investigation. Alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor on the pedestrian's part.
OSP was assisted at the scene by Tillamook County Sheriff's Office, Garibaldi Fire & Rescue, and ODOT. One lane of Highway 101 was closed about four hours during the scene investigation.
