A Deer Island-area man died Monday afternoon in an accidental drowning while he was clam digging on the ocean shore about 1/4 mile south of the Peter Iredale site in Clatsop County. Oregon State Police (OSP) is completing the death investigation.
On May 31, 2010 at approximately 10:35 a.m. EDWARD JAMES KOLLER, age 60, from Deer Island, was clam digging with his son, grandsons and a family friend. While on a sand bar, KOLLER got caught in the surf and was pulled under water. Two witnesses and his son were able to pull him out of the water and found him unresponsive. They started CPR and called 9-1-1.
Warrenton Fire Department, Medix Ambulance and an OSP trooper responded to the scene. On arrival, fire and ambulance personnel continued CPR. KOLLER was transported to Columbia Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
The Clatsop County Medical Examiner responded to the hospital to assist OSP with the investigation.
