Oregon State Police (OSP) Criminal Investigation Division detectives, with the assistance of the Harney County District Attorney's Office, are continuing the investigation into Wednesday's death of an adult male found in a pickup on a dirt driveway off Taylor Road about a quarter mile east of Highway 78 in Harney County. The man was found in the pickup after he fled law enforcement officers from Harney County Sheriff's Office and FBI as they contacted him regarding aninvestigation into a wanted fugitive out of Indiana. Upon initial investigation, the deceased male matched the description of the wanted fugitive for which Harney County Sheriff's Office and FBI were attempting contact after receiving a tip the fugitive lived in the area. The man's name is withheld pending positive identification and next of kin notification.
Information authorized for release indicates on May 30, 2012 at approximately 12:30 p.m. Harney County Sheriff David Glerup and Sergeant Brian Needham, accompanied by an FBI Special Agent, were driving to a remote residence off Taylor Road to contact a man regarding a wanted fugitive investigation. As they drove up a dirt road they spotted a pickup driving in the opposite direction on a parallel dirt road separated by a fence. The law enforcement officers knew the man was armed when they saw a rifle hanging on a rack inside the pickup.
The vehicles stopped on opposite sides of the fence. The law enforcement officers and the pickup's male driver got out and briefly spoke to each other before the man got into the pickup to flee. Sheriff Glerup and Sergeant Needham both fired at least one round at the pickup as it fled the scene. The FBI agent did not shoot at the pickup.
The law enforcement officers drove upon the pickup that was stopped about a quarter mile awayfrom the original contact spot. They found the man inside with a gunshot wound to his head. A rifle was lying next to him on the pickup's seat.
Emergency medical responders were dispatched to the scene where the man was pronounced deceased.
The name of the wanted fugitive is not being released pending positive identification of the deceased male. An autopsy is pending and the OSP investigation is continuing.
