Coquille Woman Dies, Son Injured After Tree Falls on Car on Highway 42

A Coquille-area woman died Saturday afternoon and her son was seriously injured when a tree fell onto their vehicle as it was traveling west on Highway 42 west of Coquille.
According to Oregon State Police (OSP) Lieutenant Steve Smartt, on June 14, 2008 at approximately 3:59 p.m. a 1993 Toyota sport utility vehicle operated by CRYSTAL R. BARRETT, age 42, from Coquille, was westbound on Highway 42 near milepost 6. As BARRETT was negotiating a right hand curve a tree fell onto her vehicle impacting the front window and front pillars.
BARRETT was pronounced deceased at Bay Area Hospital. Her son, TANNER J. BARRETT, age 14, was listed in serious condition.
OSP troopers from the Coos Bay Area Command office are completing the investigation. Coquille Valley Fire and Rescue, ODOT, and Coos County Medical Examiner Kim Karcher assisted in the investigation.
