Oregon State Police (OSP) was notified that a former Astoria City Council member's wife who was critically injured in a Tuesday traffic crash in the Astoria area died Thursday morning at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in Portland. OSP is continuing the investigation into the cause of the crash.

According to OSP Lieutenant Duane Stanton, ANNA M. MORDEN, age 83, reportedly died June 16, 2011 from injuries sustained on June 14 when she was a passenger in a pickup driven by her husband, DONALD B. MORDEN, age 83. DONALD MORDEN is still hospitalized at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. Investigators confirmed the couple were using safety restraints at the time of the crash.

On June 14, 2011 at approximately 3:30 p.m. OSP was requested to respond to investigate the crash at the request of Astoria Police Department. At about 3:13 p.m. a small Toyota pickup driven by DONALD B. MORDEN, age 83, from Astoria, was northbound on Highway 105 approaching a left curve where 5th Street intersects. According to a witness, a dark gray car was stopped at a stop sign southbound on 5th Street and pulled into the path of the pickup causing the pickup to come to a near stop. As the car cleared the intersection, the pickup was struck in the rear by a loaded log truck driven by KENNETH NESS, age 54, from Astoria. The impact pushed the pickup into a median area.

The unidentified vehicle was last seen southbound on Highway 105. Following a request for the public's help, on June 15 OSP troopers identified and located a 19-year old female driver of the car witnesses said pulled in front of the MORDEN's pickup causing them to abruptly slow to a near stop before being rear-ended. The driver's name is withheld pending completion of the crash investigation and a decision on any enforcement action.

DONALD MORDEN and his wife, ANNA M. MORDEN, age 83, were extricated by Astoria Fire Department personnel and transported by ambulance to Columbia Memorial Hospital in Astoria. ANNA MORDEN was transferred by LifeFlight to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center and DONALD MORDEN was transferred by ground ambulance to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center with serious injuries.

NESS was not injured. He was not using safety restraints.

ODOT, Astoria Police Department, Astoria Fire Department and Lewis & Clark Fire Department assisted at the scene.
