Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers are continuing the investigation into Sunday afternoon's fatal traffic crash that resulted in the death of a 73-year old man after his pickup collided with a Newberg-area church bus on Highway 18 east of Sheridan. None of the children or adults on the bus was injured.

According to OSP Sergeant Brad Hessel, on June 24, 2012 at approximately 3:10 p.m. a 1984 Crown bus owned by Newberg Christian Church and operated by JOHN D. TURNER, age 54, from Newberg, was westbound on Highway 18 near milepost 34 when an eastbound 2005 Ford Ranger pickup drifted onto the shoulder. The Ford's driver, LESTER J. LINDBERG, age 73, from Grand Ronde, tried to drive back into the eastbound lane, lost control and collided with the bus.

LINDBERG was pronounced deceased at the scene. Safety restraint use information is not available.

TURNER, an adult chaperone, and 9 pre-teen aged children were not injured. They were enroute to the coast for a church camp. Parents and church members responded to the scene and transported the children to the camp.

OSP troopers from the McMinnville Area Command office was assisted at the scene by Yamhill County Sheriff's Office, Sheridan Fire District, and ODOT. Highway 18 was re-opened about 8:15 p.m.
