Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers are continuing the investigation into Saturday morning's single vehicle rollover fatal traffic crash on Interstate 5 south of Salem that resulted in the death of two people and serious injuries to a third person.
According to Sergeant Craig Ball, on June 25, 2011 at approximately 8:00 a.m. a Ford van with three male occupants was northbound on Interstate 5 near milepost 248 when it traveled onto the right soft shoulder, over-corrected and returned back to the traffic lanes where it rolled several times before coming to rest on its top in the center grass median. A passenger was ejected and transported to Salem Hospital with serious injuries.
Driver JOSE GOMEZ MONTIEL, age 18, from Woodburn, and another passenger were pronounced deceased at the scene.  The deceased passenger is identified as ERIK OLMOS VALLEJO, age 19, from Woodburn. Both victims were using safety restraints.
Passenger CARLOS VALLEJO-VITAL, age 20, from Salem, was ejected and seriously injured. He told investigators he was asleep and unaware of why the crash happened. He was not using safety restraints.
OSP troopers from the Salem Area Command office are continuing the investigation with the assistance of an OSP crash reconstructionist.
Salem Fire Department and ODOT assisted at the scene. A detour was quickly established allowing traffic to bypass the scene until the northbound lanes were opened about 1:00 p.m.
