Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers are continuing the investigation into Sunday's fatal traffic crash that resulted in the death of a Salem-area woman on Highway 18 about two miles west of Grand Ronde.
According to OSP Senior Trooper Jesse Orosco, on June 27, 2010 at approximately 11:27 a.m. a 2001 Chevrolet Cavalier four-door driven by JUDITH MEREDITH, age 64, from Salem, was eastbound on Highway 18 when, for an unknown reason, it drifted across the center line and struck the driver side of a westbound 2005 Fleetwood motorhome towing a Chevrolet Cavalier. The victim's Chevrolet Cavalier came to rest in the westbound lane. MEREDITH was using safety restraints and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The Chevrolet Cavalier towed by the motorhome detached and came to rest blocking a private driveway on the side of the highway. The motor home came to a stop in the westbound lane.
The motorhome's driver, JOHN STEIN JR., age 72, and his passenger/wife, MARY STEIN, age 69, both from Seeley Lake, Montana were not injured. Both were using safety restraints.
OSP troopers were assisted at the scene by Polk County Sheriff's Office, Willamina Fire Department and medics, Polk County Medical Examiner, and ODOT.
An estimated 100 gallons of fuel from the motorhome spilled onto the highway and was cleaned up by NW Firefighters Haz Mat team.
Highway 18 was closed about five hours as ODOT handled traffic duties with a detour in place.
