Fatal Traffic Crash - Highway 18 near Sheridan

Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers are continuing the investigation into the cause of a Tuesday afternoon traffic crash on Highway 18 about one mile east of Sheridan that later turned into a fatality. The crash resulted in the death of a McMinnville-area man and injuries to an Amity teenager.
According to OSP Trooper Chad Drew, on June 28, 2011 at approximately 5:55 p.m. a 2003 Chevrolet van driven by HAYWOOD L. DAVIS III, age 17, from Amity, was westbound on Highway 18 near milepost 35 when it crossed the double solid yellow centerline and collided with an eastbound 2004 Ford Escape driven by BRIAN E. PURDELL, age 52, from McMinnville.
Both drivers were transported by ambulance to Willamette Valley Medical Center.  PURDELL died Tuesday evening at the hospitalDAVIS received non-life threatening injuries.  Both drivers were using safety restraints and both vehicles' airbags deployed.
OSP troopers from the McMinnville Area Command office are continuing the investigation.
Sheridan Fire & Rescue Department, Yamhill County Sheriff's Office, and ODOT assisted at the scene.
