Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers, with the assistance of Deschutes County Sheriff's Office, are continuing the investigation into Tuesday afternoon's single vehicle fatal traffic crash on Highway 97 about ten miles north of LaPine. The crash resulted in the death of a 79-year old Bend-area man.
According to OSP Sergeant Keith Taylor, on July 5, 2011 at approximately 4:45 p.m. a 2000 Jeep Cherokee sport utility vehicle driven by GEORGE OSTER TURNER JR, age 79, from Bend, was southbound on Highway 97 near milepost 155. Witnesses reported the vehicle traveled off the west side of the highway, down a 15-foot embankment and crash into a tree without slowing down.
TURNER was pronounced deceased at the scene by responding Sunriver EMS personnel. Airbags deployed in the vehicle but safety restraint use is pending confirmation.
OSP was assisted at the scene by Deschutes County Sheriff's Office, Sunriver EMS, and ODOT. Traffic was restricted to one lane for about two hours.
