Washington Man Arrested When Traffic Stop Leads to 65 lbs. of Marijuana south of Ashland

 Kent, Washington man was arrested last week when a traffic stop led to the discovery of approximately 65 pounds of marijuana in the vehicle he was operating on Interstate 5 south of Ashland.  The approximate value of the seized marijuana is estimated at $195,000.

On July 2, 2009 a joint transportation safety patrol effort involving Oregon State Police and Jackson County Sheriff's Office was being conducted leading up to the Fourth of July holiday weekend.  At approximately 7:30 a.m. a Jackson County deputy sheriff stopped a 2009 Toyota Camry displaying Nevada license plates northbound on Interstate 5 near milepost 10 for a traffic violation.  The driver was identified as ELIAS SALVADOR FUENTES, age 22, from Kent, Washington.

With the assistance of Oregon State Police troopers, a subsequent investigation led to the discovery in the trunk of several large plastic garbage bags containing a total of 65 individually wrapped one pound plastic bags of high grade marijuana.

Oregon State Police Drug Enforcement Section detectives assisted with the investigation.  FUENTES was arrested and lodged in the Jackson County Jail for Unlawful Possession, Delivery and Manufacturing of a Controlled Substance - Marijuana.
