Five men are facing charges in Deschutes County Circuit Court following a ten month investigation involving fish and wildlife officers from Oregon State Police and Idaho into wildlife crimes in both states. Charges are pending in the Idaho cases against the suspects.

In September 2008, OSP troopers assigned to the Central Oregon Fish & Wildlife Team started an investigation after Senior Trooper James Hayes found a camera in the woods near a bear bait site. Hayes saw a photograph on the camera of one of the suspects (LOOSLI) whom Hayes knew from previous contacts. The subsequent investigation led OSP Fish & Wildlife troopers to serve a search warrant in February 2009 at a residence near La Pine regarding unlawful black bear baiting and false application for residence license and tags.

During the search, evidence regarding the illegal baiting and taking of numerous bears was discovered. Troopers also found evidence of numerous illegal taken deer and other various wildlife crimes that occurred in Oregon and Idaho, and numerous video tapes and a camera depicting at least four known suspects engaging in wildlife crimes of interest in Oregon and Idaho.

Also seized from another residence were Moose, Bear and Cougar taxidermy mounts.

Hayes and Sergeant David Pond worked with Idaho Fish & Game Officers (IDFG) on this case. IDFG officers traveled to Bend to view the video tapes and other evidence, and warrants were issued in Oregon for the offenses.
