A Corvallis man died early Friday morning when his car was struck by a small pickup on Highway 99W near Corvallis. Two others were injured and the investigation is continuing.
According to Oregon State Police (OSP) Sergeant Craig Flierl, on July 18, 2008 at approximately 12:14 a.m. a 2003 Chevrolet S10 pickup driven by AARON JAMES VEDEN, age 21, from Corvallis, was southbound on Highway 99W near milepost 77 when it crossed the centerline into the northbound lane. A 1990 Geo Storm driven by AWAD MOHAMED ELGARGURI, age 49, from Corvallis, was northbound and attempted to avoid the oncoming pickup. The Geo was struck in the driver's side by the pickup.
AWAD ELGARGURI was pronounced deceased at the scene. His son/passenger, ARUBAHR ELGARGURI, age 16, was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in Corvallis with minor injuries. Safety restraint use by both occupants is to be determined.
VEDEN was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. He was using safety restraints and his pickup's airbags deployed.
OSP troopers from the Albany Area Command office are continuing the investigation. Fatigue is a possible contributing factor in VEDEN's driving.
Benton County Sheriff's Office, Corvallis Fire Department and ODOT assisted at the scene. Highway 99W northbound lane was closed about four hours as traffic was routed through using the southbound lane.
