Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers arrested an Estacada man upon his release from a Portland hospital following a Saturday evening traffic crash in Estacada that resulted in the death of a motorcyclist.

According to OSP Sergeant Dan Swift, on July 18, 2009 at approximately 6:30 p.m. OSP troopers responded to a serious injury traffic collision on Highway 224 at Industrial Way in Estacada. The investigation indicates a 1973 BMW motorcycle operated by VAN KELLEMS III, age 34, from White Salmon, Washington was eastbound on Highway 224 just west of Estacada when a westbound 1992 Toyota 4Runner driven by CHRISTOPHER MIXON, age 21, from Estacada, made a left turn directly in the path of the motorcycle.

The motorcycle struck the Toyota's passenger side partially ejecting KELLEMS from the motorcycle. As a result of the impact the Toyota rolled over before coming to a rest on its wheels on the south side of the highway.

KELLEMS was transported by LifeFlight to Legacy Emanuel Hospital where he was pronounced deceased at about 10:30 p.m.

MIXON was taken to Oregon Health Sciences University where he was treated for minor injuries. Upon his release early Sunday morning, OSP troopers arrested MIXON and lodged him in the Clackamas County Jail on charges of Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants and Manslaughter in the Second Degree.

Highway 224 eastbound lanes were closed while the Oregon State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit investigated the collision. All lanes were re-opened by 8:45 p.m.
OSP was assisted at the scene by the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office, Estacada Fire Department, and U.S. Forest Service law enforcement officers.
