Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers are continuing the investigation into Monday afternoon's fatal traffic crash on Highway 26 west of Elsie.
According to OSP Sergeant Andrew Merila, on July 20, 2009 at approximately 4:17 p.m. a full-size Chevrolet pickup driven by WILLIAM J. PIERCE, age 37, from Hillsboro, was westbound on Highway 26 near milepost 20. According to witnesses the pickup passed another vehicle in a no passing zone at a high rate of speed, lost control as it moved back into the westbound lane and struck an embankment. It rolled several times before coming to rest on its top in the eastbound lane.
PIERCE was pronounced deceased at the scene. Safety restraint use information is not available. Alcohol is a possible contributing factor.
OSP troopers from the Astoria Area Command office are continuing the investigation. Local emergency responding agencies, the Clatsop County Medical Examiner and ODOT assisted at the scene.
