Fatal Traffic Crash - Highway 126W east of Florence

A Coos Bay man died Thursday morning in a fatal traffic crash within a highway work zone on Highway 126W about eleven miles east of Florence. The victim's name is released following next of kin notifictaion. Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers from the Florence and Springfield offices are continuing the investigation.
On July 23, 2009 at approximately 6:00 a.m. a 1999 Nissan pickup driven by SHANNON BLAKE SMALLEY, age 45, from Coos Bay, was eastbound on Highway 126W near milepost 11. While entering a right curve the pickup crossed the centerline and sideswiped a 2005 Ford F150 pickup. The Nissan then crashed into a boat and trailer towed behind the pickup.
SMALLEY was pronounced deceased at the scene. He was not using safety restraints.
The Ford pickup's driver, STEVEN SABIN, age 40, and passenger DALE BOHNA, age 41, both from Eugene, were not injured. Both were using safety restraints.
All lanes were closed about 90 minutes before one lane was open and traffic moved through the area with help of construction zone flagging crews and ODOT.
Mapleton and Siuslaw fire departments assisted at the scene.
